When a couple decides to marry, the bride’s life often turns itself upside down. From the purchase of the first bridal magazine to the hundreds of ideas that pour forth in the coming months, the lists are endless, the planning precise, the details exact.

My career as a wedding photographer has taken me on many adventures. I’ve seen both the good and the bad, the planned and the impromptu. The ‘what ifs’ can be endless: what if it rains? what if humidity melts the cake? what if the flowers droop? what if the announcements are misspelled? what if? what if?

For some of the truly spectacular weddings, and the most happy and carefree brides, there is usually a team behind the scenes that pull together a flawless performance — taking care of all those ‘what ifs’ and simply allowing a bride to be radiant and confident on her special day.

Last year I photographed Katie and Nick’s engagement session located in the carefree wilds of the remote barrier islands of South Carolina and recently photographed their wedding at the Southside Baptist Church in Columbia, SC and incredible reception at 701 Whaley,

Wedding planner Melanie Murphy (By Invitation Only) did an incredible job ensuring each detail was perfect for Katie & Nick’s celebration and left nothing to chance. Any of the ‘what ifs’ had already been eliminated under Melanie’s watchful guidance.
And when it came to florals that stretched from the ceiling (yes, ceiling!) to the cake, Fern Studio  did a truly breathtaking job that astonished the imagination and was the perfect compliment to the stunning four-tiered cake designed by the infamous Nonnah’s.
Katie & Nick have so many beautiful and memorable moments throughout their wedding day, but the one that I hold closest in memory is the instant they were greeted by hundreds of family and friends as they exited the church under a shower of rose petals. It was there I witnessed a radiant and confident couple, to whom I wish a lifetime of happiness.

I once read a quote by Joyce Meyer that said, “A positive attitude gives you power over your circumstances instead of your circumstances having power over you.”
I think we’ve all had those moments in life — and how you choose to approach the situation ultimately affects everyone who surrounds you.

I can think of no better example of a positive attitude than my bride Jen, who recently married the love of her life, Frayne. Her wedding day didn’t have even the smallest ray of sunshine, and the downpour of rain continued throughout the day.  While many brides would have been devastated, Jen never lost her smile. Her radiance provided all the light and warmth needed for this special occasion, and, along with the numerous umbrellas she had provided for her guests, the wedding was a beautiful event to be remembered for a lifetime.

Special thanks to the incredible team I had the privilege of working with on this wedding! Full contributors list below.

If it rains on your wedding day, every time it rains for the rest of your life you will be blessed with a reminder of that special moment.

When I first met Lauren and Andrew for their Engagement Session in the Outer Banks, the one thing I noticed above all, was the magic that existed between these two. They are a couple whose deep devotion to each other are complimented with true romance and an unshakable faith in God.
There were many prayers said the day of their wedding at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, but none so important as their first prayer together as husband and wife, after lighting the Unity Candle at the altar.  “It was a very special moment for us,” said Lauren, as she described her favorite memories of the wedding.
Wedding planner Ashley Cash of The Graceful Host provided exactly the right touch for this couple…Calla Lilies.  Derived from the Greek word meaning beauty, the Calla Lily is a traditional symbol of marital bliss, true devotion and divinity.  I can think of no better way to describe this amazing couple than the symbolism of the Calla Lilly.

“A single flower can be my garden…a single friend, my world.” Leo Buscaglia

I recently had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with Carolina Bride for their Fall issue.  As you can imagine, I was honored beyond belief.
As I met with then Editor Cristina Wilson to discuss details and envision the article, my heart was pounding.  This was it! I was collaborating on a feature, taking notes and making mental images of a storybook Fall wedding.
As the day dawned at the historic Old Sherrill’s Inn near Asheville, NC, it was a drizzly morning and rain was in the forecast throughout the day.  Oftentimes near the Great Smoky Mountains, those rainy days will end with a gorgeous sunset, so we kept our fingers crossed while battling with the weather.
Later that evening, a car load of optimists waited near Max Patch Mountain, eyes scanning the sky for a clearing — and suddenly there it was. The wind shifted, the clouds began to part, and the sun slowly slid into view.  We immediately jumped out as the sun was racing towards the horizon.
It wasn’t until after we started off the mountain again, the shoot being declared a success, that it dawned on me one of those pictures might be the cover shot.  I guess it just goes to show that once the eye goes to the camera, all other thoughts are gone except the beauty that lies immediately in your sight.

Real life is about weathering the storms of life together — Seth Adam Smith

My special thanks to Barbara Pedwell of From This Day Forward Wedding & Event Design, who truly did an incredible job bringing this vision to life and to my amazing assistant Jessica Henry.

It was nearly a year ago that I found myself surrounded by the beauty of high cliffs and crashing waves as I traveled to California for the Engagement Session of Lib and Magnus.
Fast forward to the present, via American Airlines, and I was making a return trip to the West Coast for their wedding of a lifetime.  Being a photographer at weddings both small and large, I must admit I’ve never seen anything like this. It was amazing to say the least. In fact, the word amazing doesn’t even come close.
Amidst a backdrop of the Mayacamas Mountain Range, the wedding was held at the Chalk Hill Estate in Healdsburg.  This estate is home not only to the award winning Chalk Hill Winery, but to a vast array of their culinary artistry as well.

For a wedding of this magnitude, only the best of planners could arrange everything down to the minute detail.  Enter the incredibly talented Kelly McLeskey Dolata of A Savvy Event, who managed each intricate facet with effortless ease.

With Lib being a California girl with friends on the East Coast, and Magnus hailing from New Zealand, the guest list was like a worldwide celebration as friends and family traveled from across the globe to celebrate this momentous occasion. The bride, who was truly radiant and calm amid the whirl of activity, put everyone at ease with her gracefulness.  I can only imagine this is what it would be like to witness the wedding of a Princess.

While photographing the couple’s portraits later in the afternoon, we were absolutely shocked to look in the sky above them and see heart-shaped clouds. Unbeknownst to the bride and groom, it appeared that even the Heavens had sent their own salutations and best wishes for their marriage.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” ~ Genesis 2:18

No two clients are the same, and no two weddings can ever be duplicated  — and this was a perfect example. For this couple and their families, the first Saturday of May was always planned around The Kentucky Derby, and likewise, so would their wedding.
As the crowds were pouring into Churchill Downs, a similarly excited, albeit somewhat smaller, crowd was convening at The Arbors Events near Lake Norman, North Carolina to celebrate a wedding like none other.
In North Carolina, the bride and her parents were walking toward the rose covered arch, while in Kentucky, the contenders were making their way from the barn to the paddock.
In North Carolina, a couple deeply in love were saying their vows, while in Kentucky, the participants were listening for the ‘Rider’s Up’ call.
Once in the reception area, the wedding party and guests quickly wrote down their favorites on the betting board, grabbed their champagne and turned toward the big screen television. As toasts were made to the bride and groom, American Pharoah was making his way across the finish line.

Although I may be one of the few Americans who have never seen The Kentucky Derby, something tells me I’ll be tuning in next year. Perhaps not to see the race itself, but rather to search among the spectators for Katie & Ben as they celebrate their first anniversary.

Every love story is beautiful, but ours is my favorite.  – Unknown

12…13…14

According to the national news, approximately 21,000 couples tied the knot on the last sequential date of this century. I was honored to be part of this historical event for Kaitlin and Conor, as they exchanged vows at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

Following the ceremony, a beautiful reception was held at Adaumont FarmLeigh Pearce, a Greensboro based wedding planner coordinated the special day.  Kaitlin and Conor actually live in Los Angeles, so I can only imagine how difficult this long-distance wedding would have been for them without the assistance of Leigh!

Many congratulations to the beautiful couple and their families and special thanks to Leigh Pearce for her impeccable attention to detail and organization.

Wedding Photography can have so many facets. From the Engagement through the Wedding itself, it’s a whirlwind of sessions, and many times the stress involved for a couple can be nearly overwhelming.
Typically, many couples are forced to choose a wedding venue based on the size of their guest list and the many accommodations needed for a large wedding party, thus their dreamy idea of an isolated mountaintop are cast aside for the more practical locations.

For Jennifer and Neil , they opted to fulfill their dream with a Day After Session in the wilds of Boone, North Carolina.
We had actually attempted scheduling the shoot several times, but had to delay each time because of snow in the mountains.  Finally, with the temperatures barely reaching 50 degrees, we traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway in search of a ridge we had only ever read about.

We were dressed for hiking, and in addition to all the camera gear, we were also carrying all the required wedding attire. You can only imagine the looks we received along the trail that day. After a lengthy hike, which included crossing over downed trees, we reached a spot that could double as a dressing room of sorts. Walking several yards off the trail, Neil and I held a sheet behind which Jennifer changed into her wedding gown. The process was repeated as Neil donned his tux.

We continued with our hike, albeit much slower.  If we thought people were staring before, it was nothing like the looks this couple were now receiving from the other hikers along trail. They were sudden celebrities and hikers stopped to talk, and wish them congratulations on their wedding.  Here we were, miles from civilization on a windy mountaintop. It was just surreal.  Both the couple and myself felt the amazing peacefulness of our surroundings envelope us.  It was honestly one of the most amazing moments I’ve had as a photographer.  I could easily picture shooting an elopement from this scenic spot — it was inspiring and captivating to say the least.

Once the sun began to ebb, the shadows suddenly fell over the mountains, leaving us chilled and ready for the trek back down the trail. Using our flashlight apps, we navigated our way down the mountain and back into civilization.  But for a short while, we were at the top of creation in our own world. A world filled with dreams and inspiration. A world in which Jennifer and Neil will now travel together as husband and wife.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Many of you may remember Leah and Kyle’s unique and colorful Engagement Session at the South Carolina State Fair which was featured in Carolina Bride and on Something Turquoise. Needless to say, their wedding was as equally beautiful and fun.

The weather, which is naturally unpredictable in the Asheville mountains, was of course…unpredictable! They shared their First Look in the vineyards of Burntshirt while the thunder rolled in the background with darkening skies and the smell of rain on the horizon. Interestingly enough, the rain was never a topic. Dating for nearly four years and getting to know this couple and the love they share, a downpour truly wouldn’t have hindered their spirits or mood. To witness a First Look is truly a remarkable experience, with Leah and Kyle’s being no exception. The tears, emotion, excitement and complete adoration that they share was so apparent and something I truly love about this couple. As the wind picked up and thunder grew louder, we decided to cut our time short and head back in only to have a torrential downpour start moments following us seeking shelter!

The ceremony was held at the beautiful and rustic Biltmore United Methodist Church in downtown Asheville and the reception continued through the night at Burntshirt Vineyards. At the close of the evening I looked out towards the vineyards and the fog was just so intense! Knowing this couple, their love for photography and trust in me, I said, “So, there’s this amazing fog outside…..” and without evening finishing Leah says, “Let’s go!”

So, to Leah and Kyle…..Thank you for entrusting me to tell your story and signing up for any and all crazy ideas I may have put forth. You two are forever so very special to me and it was truly an honor getting to know you and your family and being there to witness and document the unique and amazing love you share.

My blog readers first met Megan & Robbie when I wrote about their Engagement Session at The Arbors in Cleveland, NC. This playful and spontaneous couple recently married at The Arbors and I wanted to share some highlights from their beautiful wedding.
We couldn’t have asked for a more gorgeous day — hardly a cloud in the sky, a gentle breeze,  just perfect for an outdoor wedding.  The ceremony and reception went flawlessly with a few unique surprises along the way.  As the darkness fell, the dancing slowed and the crowd began to disperse, we were left with the last remnants of the evening. Snuggled together by an outdoor fire in their wedding finery, Megan & Robbie prove their spontaneity yet again as the marshmallows and chocolate miraculously appear as they celebrate together by roasting smores over the flames.

Love is sweet…
